What I’ve learned from Stacey Solomon

My Spiritual Reflection on 'Sort your life out' - Thank you Stacey!

I’ve been watching Sort Your Life Out with Stacey Solomon, and I can’t help but see the deep parallels with our spiritual lives. On the surface, it’s a programme about decluttering homes—but at heart, it’s about healing, letting go, and making space for new life.

Every episode, Stacey and her team gently walk into homes overflowing with “stuff.” Some of it is precious and cherished. Some of it is broken, forgotten, or heavy with painful memories. Yet all of it is being held onto. And isn’t that just like our hearts?

All the stuff (the ENTIRE contents of the house) gets packed into boxes, transported in removal vans to a huge warehouse, and gets laid out in ordered sections to be looked at, objectively and away from the context of their home, to then be decided whether its to be thrown away, donated, kept or recycled. Then a few days later the stuff to be kept is taken back and ordered beautifully in the freshened up home. Amazing.

Stacey—warm, patient, full of hugs and empathy—gives each person the space to tell the story behind their “stuff.” She validates their feelings. She never mocks or dismisses. Instead, she helps them see what can be kept, what can be honoured, and what needs to be released. And then, alongside her team, she helps create a fresh beginning: a safe haven, a place transformed into a home where the family can truly flourish again.

Isn’t that what God longs to do in us?

I find myself thinking about the things I “hoard” inwardly:

  • Bitterness I’ve not released.

  • Unforgiveness that clings tight.

  • Unresolved pain or trauma that still shapes me.

  • Disappointments and confusion that I’ve not named and brought before God.

What would those look like if they were laid out in a huge warehouse (by other people) to be seen for what they truly are??

The Psalmist prays: “Search me, O God, and know my heart… See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23–24)

The Spirit of God is the gentle Counsellor who sits with us in the mess and chaos. He listens, validates, and lovingly asks: “Do you need to keep holding onto this? Or can we let it go?” And when we open our hands, He begins His work of renewal.

So today, my prayer is simple:

Lord, what in my heart needs sorting out? What am I cherishing that isn’t life-giving? Show me what to keep, what to release, and how to make space for You to dwell in me more fully. Amen.
